LA CASA TORQUATO TASSO
Buenos Aires, La Boca.
La Boca is a popular district overlooking the Riachuelo, the old port of Buenos Aires. It was founded by Italian immigrants, especially Genoese, who in the last decades of the ‘800 and the first ones of the ‘900 found a sometimes permanent makeshift dwelling place in 'conventillos', buildings made of tin or of pieces of wood shared by different families, when they did not occupy some buildings abandoned by the well-off classes in their escape to the northern neighborhoods. Because, we must admit, here we are not only in the Southern Hemisphere; we are also in the south of the city of Buenos Aires, that mythical extension evoked several times by Jorge Luis Borges or by the lines of Homero Manzi, to make just two examples. La Boca, therefore, a poor neighborhood that more than others has suffered and is still suffering from the consequences of the devastating cyclical crises of the Argentine economy; a problematic district where some non-profit organizations and charities have come forward with the aim of somewhat rectifying the lack of care, educational and otherwise services. Among these associations is the CICOPS, a group of people that, with their skills and through different workshops (music, dance, theater, painting, cinema ...) work in Casa Torquato Tasso (the seat of an old association of mutual relief founded in 1927 by our immigrants) with some 300 children and adolescents in a series of educational activities aimed at the recovery and development of their expressive capabilities, in this way removing them from the road. |
This video is the result of one of several laboratories that the children "taken off the road" can attend. The cinema may be a chance for redemption and a universal tool for sharing and growth. It will be our commitment to continue to publish the work of the operators of the Casa, not only in this area but in all those areas that until now have represented, and continue to do so, "the tools with which to build the future of these children."
The best way to talk about the work of the Casa Torquato Tasso is undoubtedly hearing the words of those who in this house have not only found "a refuge" but above all an opportunity for growth. We are giving the link to access in order to get to know the work of CICOPS, the NGO that for years we have been supporting thanks to your help. For any contact use the form at your disposal. |
